Grab a glass of wine, or cup of coffee, relax, and give yourself a minute to enjoy the Van Dyke family’s playful at home family portrait session. You’ll feel like you’re a part of the family by the end of it, just like I did! I had the hardest time narrowing down these photos, so sorry for oversharing. But I really loved every minute of hanging out with Zach & Kelly, and their five kids. It made me think I want a big family one day… :) I kind of loved all of the craziness!
When I walked into their house, I was quickly acquainted with just how hectic life is with five kids running around, and was able to help each of the kids choose their outfits. This is heaven to me! :) I love giving my opinion on what to wear, and helping style a shoot. Layers and layers of cute clothes were sprawled out on the bed, and one-by-one we choose outfits for each kid. The girls were so cute and definitely had an opinion about what they wanted to wear, and wanted to show me their favorite dresses, necklace, etc. In the meantime, their youngest, Huck, was passed around from person to person, and was completely content just being plopped down wherever he was put. At one point, I found him on the floor of the bathroom just hanging out! Side note – all of the Van Dyke kids are named after famous literary characters. They are expecting their sixth child now, and I can’t wait to see what they name him!
We chose Kelly’s outfits last, and paired it with some fun Dora Mae jewelry (the best jewelry designer out there!). Kelly used to be an interior designer in California, as you can probably tell from her amazing house, so every corner of it was so inspiring and fun to photograph. I loved how eclectic and funky the accents were, mixed with bright white furniture and walls. It also sat right on a little pond, surrounded by so much lush Florida greenery. It was a little tropical oasis! The kids read books, played football and tackled their dad, played pick up sticks, and painted in the family room. The grand finale of this playful at home family portrait session was having a dance party to some Hamilton music!
We then moved the shoot to a field close to their house, right at sunset. I drove Alice & Oliver from their house to the field, and I’ve never been so impressed with two kids before! They were so kind to me, and said that I was the only photographer who made taking pictures fun! I mean, what more could I ask for?! Shooting at golden hour with the seven of them was so hot, but so worth it. I’m so happy with the way these pictures turned out; I want to do more family shoots like this, where we spend some time hanging out in the home, and then go outdoors for some more classic family portraits. I just love the idea of having pictures of families playing games, wrestling each other, reading books, and doing things they would actually do if I wasn’t there. Aren’t these the kind of things we want to remember?
